| They're just like us, only rich
Morgan, tuning into "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" or giving Donald Trump a seemingly endless shelf life. What's striking now is how different the dynamic seems, with a fluid sense of possibilities, ever-changing rules and shifting boundaries. At a time when so many people have gotten rich, wealth no longer seems so remote, unattainable or mysterious to a lot of middle-class people. In some fundamental way, fascination with the rich has turned into a kind of yearning fascination with ourselves. We're really like them, we like to think, or could be, with the right combination of circumstances and luck. A lot of rich guys run around in shorts and sandals instead of business suits now - even if they're padding up and down the aisles of their private jets or around the grounds of their enormous estates.
Pairings: Potstickers to match Pinot Noir bring properity for the ...
In China, red is an auspicious, lucky color. It is also the color for Chinese New Year. The 2008 Lunar New Year (the Year of the Rat) began yesterday, so this week's wine - Carneros Pinot Noir - is a perfect fit. Pinot Noir, one of the most food-friendly reds around, gets a pairing boost from Carneros' typical characteristics: moderate weight, red fruit and zingy acidity. Add generally lower alcohol levels (around 13.5 to 14 percent) and it's a red wine fit for many Chinese dishes, including those with a hint of chile heat. Cherry, red raspberry and strawberry fruit aromas and flavors will support but not overpower Chinese ingredients like oyster sauce, soy sauce and fermented black beans. The contrast of salty-savory sauces to tart red fruit is a complementary match.
Is hybridoma production about to take a quantum leap forward?
Two cultures derived from the same culture of a stable hybridoma clone were grown, one in NPD and the other in DI based medium supplemented with 3 percent FCS. Before seeding the cells were washed in serum-free media to verify the removal of any residual serum. During a period of two weeks the supernatants were collected as indicated and the cells were counted on the same day. The cultures were fed on the 4th and 10th day and medium was placed in the cultures on day 6. Although the cells in DI culture proliferated normally under these conditions, they failed to produce measurable quantities of antibody. Credit: Natalie Gavrilov-Yusim .

I'm pursuing the Jean prison," Gillespie said in an interview this week with the Review-Journal editorial board. "The state says they're going to leave there." Taking over the Jean prison would add 600 beds. The detention center currently houses 3,100 people in a facility built for 2,800. LEARNING LESSONS: The result of the G-sting investigation was a major victory in the federal government's war on public corruption, but U.S. Attorney Gregory Brower says he expects the lesson will have to be taught again. "When you see those people go to prison, you'd like to think other public officials would learn from it," Brower said in a recent interview. "I guess the (G-sting) cases and convictions show us all that the lesson learned, if there is one, is short-lived." BETTING UPDATE: The New Jersey Assembly last week voted 58-17 to approve legislation that could lead to legalizing betting on professional sports.
Toothpaste is a bright idea to fix scratched CDs
Dear Billy: Compact discs can scratch easily, but the good news is that many scratches can be wiped away with ordinary white toothpaste. Gels won't work -- just plain, white toothpaste. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto a clean sock or any lint-free cloth and apply to the CD, starting from the inside and working outward like the spokes of a wheel. Remember to wipe it from the inside out, never back and forth. Once the underside is coated, take the clean, dry part of the sock and wipe away the toothpaste, again using spokelike strokes -- from the inner edge to the outer edge. Don't use water. Just continue wiping until the paste is gone. This should work great on minor scratches on DVDs and game discs, too. Dear Heloise: I put two frozen waffles in the toaster.
