| McBee faces possible water contamination
More than 100 residents of the McBee area came together Thursday to learn more about the possible contamination of the groundwater in the region. S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control officials presented the facts of the situation and ways for the residents of the area to avoid the contaminated water. "Tonight is basically an information session," DHEC spokesman Adam Myrick said. "We’re just coming here to the community and sharing with the residents what we’ve been looking into in regards to the groundwater." Myrick said one of the chemicals contaminating the groundwater is Ethylene Dibromide (EDB) and the other is Dibromochloropropane (DBCP). Both chemicals were used as farming pesticides. DBCP was discontinued in 1979 and, according to DHEC, most use of EDB was discontinued in 1984.
Boiling water spikes bisphenol A levels
Adding boiling water to polycarbonate plastic bottles causes a dramatic spike in the amount of bisphenol A, or BPA, leaching from containers into drinks, according to a U.S. research team. The finding suggests that parents sterilizing polycarbonate baby bottles by heating them in water or in a microwave may be inadvertently increasing the amount of the estrogen-mimicking chemical leaching from the containers. It also indicates hikers who use the bottles as a thermos to store hot tea or liquids may be doing the same. The addition of boiling water increased BPA migration rates by up to 55-fold compared with water at room temperature, according to experiments run at the University of Cincinnati. A paper outlining the findings is being released today in Toxicology Letters, a peer-reviewed journal.
Bikies to be 'wiped out'
In any case, the bike-riders are NOT the cause of all the crime in the state. It is yet another typical Labor party, limp-wristed, knee-jerk reaction to make it look like they're doing something other than providing jobs for the boys! Posted by: Morgan of Brisbane 8:33am October 31, 2007 the only way you will stop organised crime - bikies or anyone - is to legalise all drugs and have them regulated the same way with alcohol. prohibition doesn't work - it didn't work with alcohol and it's not working with drugs. regulate them and take them out of the hands of the organised gangs, police, lawyers etc etc. all this bikie crackdown is a publicity stunt by the government - the police know who are involved and they prefer it that way. Learn water-wise ways to keep garden green, streams clean
Last year most of us were not worrying much about storm water runoff. Isnt it interesting how quickly our focus shifts from dealing with pollutants in runoff water to not having enough water? Whichever end of the water spectrum we are in at any given moment, water is always on our minds. In fact, the concerns about too much water and too little water are high on the list for both home gardeners and landscape professionals. Ann Higgins of Higgins Horticultural Services has noticed a big shift in customer requests in the past year. Not surprisingly, there has been a jump in the number of requests for landscape designs using drought-tolerant plants. But she is also seeing the increasing awareness of water pollution issues. Its exciting that we are starting to have requests from some large developers to address issues with water runoff, she said.

Sharapova, who has struggled in the Melbourne conditions in the past, not only handled the 34-degree heat far better than her opponent but also the big-match atmosphere. Despite being just two points from losing the first set, when trailing 4-5 and 0-30, Sharapova's serve and steadiness under pressure proved the difference. Sharapova committed just 15 unforced errors to Ivanovic's 33 and was practically unbeatable on serve, winning 89% of points on her first serve and 70% on her second. Ivanovic, who broke Sharapova just once in the match and lost her own serve on four occasions, took heart from the fact she performed far better in her second grand slam final than in her first when she was humiliated 6-1 6-2 by Henin in last year's French Open final.
