For example, consider the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have missed the playoffs the past two seasons. It is not entirely out of the realm of possibility that the Leafs make the playoffs this year but, as only two teams in the league have worse records, the Leafs prospects are less than golden. Torontos first order of business should be to make themselves competitive in their own division, where they are the only team with a losing record. They can do that one of two ways: they can plan for the short term and buy a free agent (the band aid approach to franchise maintenance), or they can blow this team up and start over. As trade rumors are center Mats Sundins constant companion, it is apparent that the Leafs have decided to rebuild by packaging their brightest, but aging, star. As Sundin is 37, there will be limited interest in his services, probably from a team in serious contention hoping to expand its bench.
Kandahar governor denies torture claim
One has to wonder to what extent he was speaking independently or merely speaking words that the government put in his mouth. Hillier is, supposedly, an expert in media relations. He recognizes the importance of manipulating public opinion. The timing is about as bad as it could get because he effectively eliminated the potential for a compromise position. Dion was about to move the LPC towards moving for a position whereby the mission essentially continued as is under the guise of a training mission. By backing Dion into a corner he is gambling that the LPC will split their vote on this. However, the LPC increasingly recognizes that a split vote only harms their position in the eyes of the electorate. Any increase or maintenance of the latest poll results showing a slight LPC lead (ignore the Ipsos-Reid because of their lack of consistency with other pollsters--see www.nodice.ca) will increase the likelihood that they will vote as a block regardless of the presence of factions within the party.

Weighing up Bradman's MCG legacy
In the MCG Long Room one morning this week, he augustly dared to take issue with Don Bradman. Moreover, the topic was one upon which Bradman was generally thought to be infallible: himself. The effect, however, was not to diminish the legend, but further it. McDonald recalled how Sir Donald once, upon seeing the youthful Sachin Tendulkar bat on television, summoned his wife, Lady Jessie, and said that the gifted Indian, more than any other batsman, most closely resembled himself in his prime. "Let me tell you, he was wrong," McDonald said affectionately. "Tendulkar is a textbook batsman, the sort coaches salivate about. But Bradman didn't bat anything like him." McDonald's point was not that Bradman was unorthodox, but that he batted on some higher plane, far beyond orthodoxy.
South Carolina Democratic Primary Coverage - Saturday, January 26, 6 ...
NBC's Kevin Corke, meantime, is at Jillian's Restaurant, Columbia, South Carolina, the Edwards campaign in the senator's home birth state, is there. And that is where Kevin will be joining us throughout the evening. Kevin, good evening to you. KEVIN CORKE, NBC CORRESPONDENT: Keith, good evening to you. I think it is interesting to just take a look around Jillian's. I think there is a bit of excitement here because they just don't know. They don't know. Did he connect with the voters like he had hoped to? Would the fact that he is a native son really pay off today? But I also think there is an unease here, because the fact of the matter is, if not here, where? If not now, when? In the case of John Edwards, he has got to show some momentum. And this is a place where certainly he would have some advantages to do that, because some of our pre-election polling seemed to suggest that Edwards is a guy who seems to be taking advantage of or at least benefiting from the ongoing Obama-Clinton spat.
