Research challenges accepted view about compulsive gambling

A Harvard Medical School research study has challenged the medical profession's accepted view of compulsive gambling as a progressive and incurable disorder.

Writing in the January 2008 issue of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, Harvard psychiatry instructor Debi LaPlante said the disease "appears to be dynamic, with individuals moving back and forth between health and more disordered states, and with a higher rate of recovery than previously assumed."

The finding challenges the official definition of pathological gambling by the American Psychiatric Association in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as "persistent and recurrent."

LaPlante said close analysis of five previously published research studies "found no evidence to support the assumption that individuals cannot recover from disordered gambling."

That analysis, for instance, found at least 29 percent of problem gamblers over time reported significant improvement.

Update: Budget Heads to Governor's Desk

If paying $1 more per pack doesn't make smokers ditch their habit, the state has other ways to help them quit. The budget will spend $30 million on smoking cessation and prevention programs. DRIVE MY CAR: Anyone who drives a car will pay more. The annual vehicle registration fee will increase from $55 to $75; driver's licenses will cost $10 more; and the fee to title a vehicle goes up $24.50. FLOAT MY BOAT: Don't think you can escape the new fees by taking to the water. The budget adds between $1.25 and $11 to boat registration fees, depending on the boat's size and motor. LOCK AND LOAD: Breathe easy, all you outdoorsmen. Hunting and fishing fees remain unchanged from last year. THE GREAT OUTDOORS: Buying a hunting license is one thing; finding a place to hunt is another. The budget could make that easier.

Redsand gives a great oppurtunity to fish in Canada

The specifics of fishing in clear water is that fish see well and they rely heavily on sight for feeding. Light penetration and oxygen is deeper, therefore fish are usually are found deeper and fish feed more toward morning and evening or even at night. Fish are more active on cloudy or windy days, because light is diffused and walleyes are less spooked by boats and surface noise. Also, in clear water walleyes school more and usually roam to find food, but if the water is slow to warm and they might be a little lethargic.Rocky reefs are natural ambush points for walleyes, especially during increased wave activity. Anchor upwind and float a leech over the rocks with a slip bobber. Make sure you don't fish too shallow, walleyes sulking in the crevices won't move far for fast moving bait. The owners and operators of Redsand Lake in Northwestern Ontario are Elson and Kim Strickland.
